We’ve all done it.

You walk into the store, see the shoe, and instantly fall in love. It’s gorgeous. It’s stylish. It looks like it belongs in your closet. The only problem?

It doesn’t fit.

But instead of putting it back on the shelf where it belongs, you convince yourself it’ll “break in.”

Sound familiar?

So you buy the shoes anyway.

Then the adventure begins.

You buy gel inserts for the balls of your feet.
You order heel grips because your foot keeps sliding.
You get the shoes professionally stretched.
You wear thick socks around the house, hoping they’ll magically become comfortable.
You even convince yourself, “They’re only for special occasions.”

Let’s be honest…they aren’t even special occasion shoes.

They’re 20-minute shoes.

You wear them from the car to the event, smile through the pain for exactly nineteen minutes, and by minute twenty you’re secretly looking for the nearest chair. By the time you get home, you’ve made a silent vow that you’ll never wear them again.

…Until the next event.

Isn’t it amazing how much work we’ll put into making something fit that was never made for us?

This is what the wrong relationship feels like.

How many times have we done the exact same thing?

We meet someone who looks good, sounds good, and checks a few boxes, so we ignore the fact that every step with them hurts.

Instead of walking away, we start buying “relationship inserts.”

We make excuses.
We lower our standards.
We overlook red flags.
We convince ourselves they’ll change.
We stretch our boundaries.
We compromise our peace.
We adjust our values just to keep something alive that God never intended to survive.

We’re trying to force a size six relationship onto a size nine calling.

The truth is, if you have to constantly force it, fix it, explain it, chase it, or carry it, there’s a good chance it doesn’t fit.

God never asked us to manipulate His will.

He asked us to trust it.

When God brings the right person, friendship, opportunity, or assignment into your life, it won’t require you to become someone you’re not just to keep it. It won’t demand that you abandon your convictions or silence the Holy Spirit to make it work.

What God has for you won’t always be easy—but it will fit.

Not because it’s perfect, but because it’s His.

The enemy loves counterfeit opportunities because they look beautiful from a distance. But beauty isn’t the same as blessing.

Some shoes belong in the store.
Some relationships belong in your past.
Some opportunities were never yours to begin with.

So stop trying to squeeze into places God never designed for you.

If the shoe doesn’t fit…

Don’t wear it.

Because what God has prepared for you won’t leave you limping. It will allow you to walk confidently in the purpose He designed just for you.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” — Ephesians 2:10

Sometimes the holiest thing you can do is leave the wrong shoes on the shelf and trust that God already has the perfect fit waiting for you.
