If the Shoe Doesn’t Fit, Don’t Wear It…

Photo by Mehmet Turgut Kirkgoz on Pexels.com

We’ve all done it.

You walk into the store, see the shoe, and instantly fall in love. It’s gorgeous. It’s stylish. It looks like it belongs in your closet. The only problem?

It doesn’t fit.

But instead of putting it back on the shelf where it belongs, you convince yourself it’ll “break in.”

Sound familiar?

So you buy the shoes anyway.

Then the adventure begins.

You buy gel inserts for the balls of your feet.
You order heel grips because your foot keeps sliding.
You get the shoes professionally stretched.
You wear thick socks around the house, hoping they’ll magically become comfortable.
You even convince yourself, “They’re only for special occasions.”

Let’s be honest…they aren’t even special occasion shoes.

They’re 20-minute shoes.

You wear them from the car to the event, smile through the pain for exactly nineteen minutes, and by minute twenty you’re secretly looking for the nearest chair. By the time you get home, you’ve made a silent vow that you’ll never wear them again.

…Until the next event.

Isn’t it amazing how much work we’ll put into making something fit that was never made for us?

This is what the wrong relationship feels like.

How many times have we done the exact same thing?

We meet someone who looks good, sounds good, and checks a few boxes, so we ignore the fact that every step with them hurts.

Instead of walking away, we start buying “relationship inserts.”

We make excuses.
We lower our standards.
We overlook red flags.
We convince ourselves they’ll change.
We stretch our boundaries.
We compromise our peace.
We adjust our values just to keep something alive that God never intended to survive.

We’re trying to force a size six relationship onto a size nine calling.

The truth is, if you have to constantly force it, fix it, explain it, chase it, or carry it, there’s a good chance it doesn’t fit.

God never asked us to manipulate His will.

He asked us to trust it.

When God brings the right person, friendship, opportunity, or assignment into your life, it won’t require you to become someone you’re not just to keep it. It won’t demand that you abandon your convictions or silence the Holy Spirit to make it work.

What God has for you won’t always be easy—but it will fit.

Not because it’s perfect, but because it’s His.

The enemy loves counterfeit opportunities because they look beautiful from a distance. But beauty isn’t the same as blessing.

Some shoes belong in the store.
Some relationships belong in your past.
Some opportunities were never yours to begin with.

So stop trying to squeeze into places God never designed for you.

If the shoe doesn’t fit…

Don’t wear it.

Because what God has prepared for you won’t leave you limping. It will allow you to walk confidently in the purpose He designed just for you.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” — Ephesians 2:10

Sometimes the holiest thing you can do is leave the wrong shoes on the shelf and trust that God already has the perfect fit waiting for you.

God’s Heart

You often hear people say they want God’s heart. But what does that look like? Do we really know what we’re saying? It is such a vast statement and one not to be taken lightly.

God is better than any of us could ever be. Yet his heart is the very thing that draws us in. Some of the attributes of God’s heart is Faith, Hope, Love, Compassion, Sacrifice, and Redemption.

First God is righteous in everything he does. God forgives. God is compassionate. God is merciful. God is good. God gives justice. God heals the brokenhearted. God is good to all. God is faithful. God never abandons us. God is gracious. God heals. God restores. God blesses. God is filled with kindness. God is slow to anger. God is all these things and more all the time.

Oh, what a wonderful place it would be if we all had God’s heart. I often pray and ask God to teach me how to love how he loves. That love is something else! A love so deep it penetrates our very soul.

The Bible shows us the way to God‘s heart is to do his will. We must be committed to God’s purpose. Imagine selflessness, imagine continual forgiveness, imagine putting others before yourself. Imagine sacrifice, imagine caring so much about people that you are willing to go after them to the ends of the earth. Imagine comforting, imagine your word meaning something. Imagine backing up what you say. Imagine people being able to count on you. This is but a glimpse of what it looks like to have God’s heart.

So while we strive on this earth Lord, as we purpose to be more like you, as we encounter your people daily, allow us to love like you, and represent you well in everything we do.

Amen.

Do you believe…

Photo by Sebastian Voortman on Pexels.com

A simple question but the answer is not so simple. Do you believe? What exactly do you believe? Why do you believe? You may have found yourself, wondering this at some point in your life.

Merriam-Webster defines belief as having a firm or wholehearted religious conviction or persuasion to regard the existence of God as a fact. Another definition is to accept (something) as true.

Ask yourself, do you regard the existence of God as fact? What things do you accept as true? Belief is the core foundation of anything you do.

To relate to God, you first have to believe that he is who he says he is. He has given us many reasons to believe he is who he says he is. From the intricate way he created our bodies to the perfect way he designed the universe with the tiniest of details. God gave us everything we needed in our world and atmosphere to thrive.

Some may feel like belief in God makes us abandon all good sense and reasoning. However, belief in God is the beginning of good sense, sound judgment and reasoning. 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that God gives us a sound mind. In other words a calm and well-balanced mind. Proverbs 2:6 tells us that God gives us wisdom. So believing in God does not cause us to abandon God sense or reasoning.

What you believe about a person is going to affect the way you relate to them. If you don’t trust a person then you will deal with them in a guarded way. If you don’t believe a person’s word or promise then you don’t act on it or put much value in it. You have to get to know a person in order to build a relationship or to believe in them or their promises. It takes relationship to trust a person’s actions.

Jeremiah 29:13 says you will seek me and find me when you search with all your heart. This sets your foundation. Only then will you know what you believe and why you believe. Which is a strong foundation. It is very difficult to tell someone about God or to minister if your own belief doesn’t have a strong foundation.

We can dispel any arguments that God is a fairytale or myth because we cannot or have not seen him. We can’t see air but we know it’s there. We can feel it. We know it’s real because of how it affects people, places and things. We cannot live without it. The same with God. We can see his hand in everything and everywhere. We need him in order to live.

A personal relationship with Christ is where it begins. Prayer and time with God and reading his word is how you get to know him. Others will try to give you their opinions, stories and experiences. I urge you to have your own encounter with God. You will never be the same. Pray for wisdom, when reading his word so that the things that need to be revealed will be revealed, and that will start a strong foundation in you. Meditate on his word. Think about it day and night. Keep it in your heart for these words will guide you daily.

If you read his word and spend time with him, you will know what his very nature is. You will have a real encounter, and you will never be the same. And that foundation can never be shaken. And you will know what to say in that moment when someone asks you, do you believe?

Heroes…

Photo by Antonius Ferret on Pexels.com

Everyone loves a good hero in a story. The one that goes above and beyond! The one who is selfless and is always there to save the day. These heroes often times exhibit supernatural strength and limitless capabilities and courage. They…are on the front lines!

Many of us know people like this, have experienced these heroes in our lives or we have been these heroes. In whatever way you have experienced this heroism it has left us with a good feeling. A sense of comfort, satisfaction and security. We feel full just knowing that whatever the situation, our hero will be there to shield us, protect us and even guide us.

God is much like the heroes I’ve been describing and actually exceeds any form of heroism I can think of. I mean, his resume is a mile long. He has a proven record with numerous amounts of references. And talk about sacrifice, he gave the ultimate sacrifice, his Son! If that is not a SUPERHERO I don’t know what is. God is a hero that is omnipresent. You can’t miss him! He is everywhere all the time. Whew! Talk about having your back! God, the ultimate Hero is even omniscient! He knows e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g! There is nothing that goes on that he doesn’t know already. I mean listen…he even knows the future! Can you say “God” for the win! Wait! Listen to this. He is also omnipotent! Boom! That’s the icing on the cake! The chocolate to the chip. The Son to the rise. Did ya see what I did there? He is able to do anything! He has unlimited power! Who wouldn’t want a hero like this?

Those of us that know God understand that he is more than just a hero, he is so much more! Sadly enough, not everyone knows this hero. Or at least not in a personal way. That is one of the reasons he called us to tell others about him. So that they can experience all that the father has to offer. So why is it so hard to tell others about Jesus? When we find a good restaurant, we can’t wait to tell others about it. When we find a great hairstylist, we can’t wait to tell others about it. When we find a good deal, we can’t wait to tell others about it.

Well, we have found the most life creating, changing, saving being in the universe! His name is Jesus Christ. We should never go a day without telling someone just how great he is. He is a master at introductions. He is the expert on all subject matter. He is able to love better than anyone. He adds to your life, not take from it. He helps you to grow and develop your character. He has so much he wants to reveal about himself, if only you will let him. So today and everyday purpose to tell someone about Jesus. Everyone needs the Ultimate Superhero in their life.

Nuggets…

Photo by Valeria Boltneva on Pexels.com

I’ve always used the term “let me drop a nugget,” when I’ve felt like I had a piece of information that I thought was important. Nuggets were something so important and good to have or know. Now, nuggets can be informational but can also be opinion-based. Either way, Oh boy do I have some nuggets for you today!

GOD – God gets a bad wrap! Let me explain what I mean. People tend to blame God for everything without even knowing who he actually is. His very character has been misinterpreted. God is not a genie in the sky or some hit man to use at your discretion whenever someone does something you deem as wrong. Nor is he hiding in every corner of your life waiting to jump out and torture you for doing wrong. God is a loving father who who wants the very best for you. He IS a Holy God, but he loves you with an everlasting love. He wants relationship with you. He has plans to prosper you. He wants to see you live a redeemed life. But there are expectations as with any parent but perfection is not one of them.

PASTORS – Pastors/Ministers are people too. Sometimes people fall into making these individuals the gods of their lives. There is only one God who is perfect in all his ways. God’s shepherds are not perfect people. Now I’m not referring to false teachers, or any of the nonsense we see happening today with some church leaders who really don’t know God. What I mean is the women and men of God who truly have heeded the calling of a shepherd, they are going to mess up sometimes. If you happen to fall privy to one of these mistakes, pray for them. Also believe it or not, they need refreshing. They pour into the lives of others constantly and it is not an easy job to lead.

FORGIVENESS – is not acceptance. Sometimes people are reluctant to forgive because they feel like they are accepting the behavior or that they are signaling that they are okay with the situation. That is not the case. Forgiveness means that you refuse to let that person’s behavior, actions or any situation cause you to hold a grudge and harbor bitterness. By no means does forgiveness equal acceptance. In fact, forgiveness is freedom for you. Freedom from hatred , roots of bitterness, and any of those things that will hinder you. Also know that forgiveness does not mean that the relationship will be the same. Sometimes it can be repaired and sometimes it cannot.

COMMUNITY – is important. Everyone needs a tribe. I know sometimes people may say they don’t need anyone. That is simply not true. We were created to have relationship with the father and others. It is very important to do life with others. We need people we can depend on, laugh with, cry with, celebrate with, mourn with. People who we encourage and who encourages us. People who hold us accountable and vice versa. We should bring community with us to others. It shouldn’t be exclusive where no one else can be a part of it. Again, everyone needs someone.

LOVE – Love is the best! To love and to be loved. There is nothing like it in the world. How can I argue, fight, be jealous, be hateful etc. when I’m busy showing love to others. Love doesn’t care about offense, Love doesn’t keep score. Love causes you to grow in so many ways. Not that it is always easy, not that you will always get it right. But purpose to love and show love everyday.

Ok God, you have my attention. Now what?

Photo by T Leish on Pexels.com

Often times God is trying to get our attention and we are befuddled with so many of life’s situations . He wants to be involved in every aspect of our life. He is there with us in every situation yet, often times we fail to acknowledge his presence. We go about our busy lives thinking that we are the playmakers, the ones making things happen. How foolishly do we depend on ourselves in every situation. How foolishly do we allow ourselves to worry about situations we don’t have the power to change. Day in and day out we burn the candle at both ends. From the time our feet hit the ground to the time we crawl back into our beds at night, we are busy with obligations and expectations. We sometimes barely have time for a “God is great, God is good, let us thank him for our food” prayer, let alone anything else. Managing expectations and obligations as best we can. Family on our minds, our jobs in our hand and tiredness at our feet, with a little bit of me time sprinkled in like leftovers.

Sound familiar? Well I can tell you, you are not alone. God is never going to go past you inviting him in. Have you ever seen a child try so hard at something and you say to them, “let me help you” and they refuse and they continue to struggle, and struggle, almost like a dog chasing their tail? You want to help them so bad, but they are determined to do it themselves. Now I am not saying that determination is a bad thing. I am saying when they struggle and frustrate themselves so much that if they would have let you help them, you could have eased that frustration. They would have accomplished whatever they were trying to do by now. If only they would have let you in. So you say “okay” and you let them do it their way. Much like when you have come to the end of yourself. When you fumble every expectation you had for yourself, your future and anything anyone else expected of you. When perfect isn’t perfect anymore. When work be “working,” when the bills are “billing,” and the math ain’t “mathing.” When everything starts to close in. You start to feel that nervous, anxious, lump in the throat feeling. You start to realize “I don’t have this under control, I can’t control any of this.” And when you can’t take it anymore, you suddenly remember, you have a life line. “Lord where are you?” Then your stomach becomes uneasy, and your whole face hurts and you suddenly realize you’ve been in a season of “YOU!” Your strength, your ability, your focus, your everything. Then you do the smartest thing you could ever do. You either look up from the floor, or you pull your head out of your hands and you look toward the sky and say “Okay God, you have my attention, now what?”

And just like the gentleman father he says “now it’s time to rest.” All this time, he’s been waiting for you to invite him in. He has been there all along, waiting to jump in like double dutch. He’s the best life coach there is and he has extended hours. His recipe for success is time with him. Time to get to show you how magnificent he is. How his yoke is easy and his burden is light. How he can transform every area of your life. How he and only he, can bring about change. And truly give you rest and peace. Let God in to every area of your life. You will see life is better with him in control.

It’s bad wind that doesn’t shift..

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

I’ve heard this saying a few times as I was growing up. My mother used to quote this all the time. As I got older I understood what this meant. Too many times I have heard people say “I haven’t changed,” or “I’m still the same old me.” Really, it would be a shame if we were “the same old us.” Let me explain.

As we journey through life, with its ups and downs and highs and lows, there should be an adjustment that takes place, a change of sorts. As we get older, we should not be the same inexperienced individuals we were at one time. How can you experience life’s ebbs and flows and not be changed in some way?

The same is true when you have a relationship with Christ. God tells us that if we are in Christ we are a new creation, old things are passed away, behold, all things become new. Ephesians 4:22 tells us to put off the old man and put on the new man (summarized). So why should we be okay with being the same old us. I’ll give you another one that I have heard over and over throughout the years, ” I’m a work in progress.” It’s okay to be a work in progress for a time, but when is the work going to be finished? What I mean is, we cannot continue to use that as an excuse not to change for the better. We cannot use that to stay at the same level and never progress to where God is calling us.

In marriage, you have heard some people say their spouses have changed. Why yes, sometimes they have changed. In marriage you are constantly learning each other all over again daily because we are going to change, and hopefully for the better.

Bad wind that doesn’t shift, simply means this. You cannot be healthy and whole and not change. You cannot stay at the same level and grow. You cannot obtain all that God has purposed for you in your same old way. You have to adjust. you have to grow, you have to move, you have to elevate. So be open to what God has in store for you. Be sensitive to his spirit and direction. We are no good to ourselves or anyone else without healthy change. And, it is okay to say, I’m not the same old me. You will not lose cool points. You’ve actually gained them by leveling up. So I challenge you today, stop being the same old you. Become the new you in Christ. Allow God to change your mind and to change you from the inside out. I promise you, you’ll love the new you.

People Pleaser…

Often we get caught up in a whirlwind of other people’s expectations and priorities. If you are like I was, you find yourself never wanting to disappoint anyone. You will go the extra mile even if it kills you. You will take on heavy loads just to make sure that others are okay. Meanwhile, you are falling apart at the seams. You feel as though you don’t know whether you are coming or going. Always busy, never enough time for yourself. Never wanting to let anyone down, being afraid of what they may say or how they may view you. And then, just when it seems as if you cannot take an ounce of anything else, the praise almost makes it seem as if it was worth it. When people shout your praises, “oh we can always count on you,” “you never let us down,” “if anyone can do it you can.” And then we hop right back on the hamster wheel of expectation, careful not to let anyone down. Meanwhile we are suffering from silent battles of fatigue, exhaustion, wrong thinking and what I like to call “people pleasing syndrome” or PPS.

I suffered from PPS for a long time. It was almost second nature to say yes to almost anything. Even if I knew it would literally kill me. But it wouldn’t be said that I didn’t come through, that I wasn’t loyal, that you couldn’t count on me. My friends, let me tell you, that is the quickest way to burn out and build up an attitude of resentment. Now hear me out, there is nothing wrong with being there for others, being reliable and trustworthy. That is far from what I am saying. But if we are not careful, we fall into the area of people pleasing.

It is okay to say “no.” Let me say that again for the people in the back, it is okay to say a blessed “I’m sorry, I will not be able to handle that.” Give yourself a break! God never meant for us to run ourselves ragged. Sometimes people will continuously push, push, push, as long as you say yes, yes yes. Don’t, get me wrong, we should be helpers, however, how can you give if your tank is empty? Think about it, why do you think the instructions on the airplane is to first give yourself oxygen and then help others? It’s because you first have to have oxygen to be able to help anyone else. It is the same in life. It is okay to rest! Even God rested when the work was done. Everyone needs to refuel, replenish and make sure that their mind, body and soul are ready for the next adventure.

People pleasing also comes with the wrong motives. We are doing things for acceptance and validation from man. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Galatians 1:10 says “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Some people believe that God is going to be mad or look down on them if the say “no,” this is simply not the case. The bible tells us that “Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety,” Proverbs 29:25.

God wants us whole. He want’s us to serve him with the right attitude. God loves us and has already accepted us through his grace. There is no amount of work, helping, serving that will cause him to love us. He already does. Shame and fear tells us that we have to work hard for his approval and the approval of man. Don’t fall into this misconception. We should have joy and peace. That’s what flows when we operate out of Love and not expectation or people pleasing. There is a quote, that I really love and stand on until this very day “Let pleasing God become bigger than pleasing people.”

Hurt…

Hurt can come in many ways. From other people, from our own personal choices, from failed expectations. Hurt can really throw us into a downward spiral of mixed emotions. Most people have experienced some level of hurt at some point in their lives. Hurt causes wounds. These wounds need healing and if we are not careful, hurt can turn into bitterness. Sometimes it feels as though you can never recover, or when you think you have, something happens and it feels like it is there all over again. I do understand, first hand, what it feels like to experience hurt so detrimental that it felt as if it touched my soul. The kind of hurt that knots your stomach at the mere thought of it. The kind that you can cry the most wretched cry that leaves your stomach muscles aching. It is painful, unbearable and downright difficult to endure. Oh, but let me tell you, there is a light at the end of that tunnel and his name is Jesus! Listen, I don’t care how hurt you are, how bad off you think you are, how deep of a rabbit hole of hurt you are in, Jesus is the answer. Let me explain, God is trustworthy. He can handle whatever we give over to him. Hurt is too heavy of a burden for us to carry on our own. 1 Peter 5: 7, tells us to give all our worries and cares to God, for he cares about us. This includes your hurt. Psalm 34:18 tells us the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. God is able to restore that which is broken. In John 11:33, when Lazarus had died and Jesus saw Mary weeping, it says he was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled. It goes on to say in in verse 38, so Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Jesus cares about our hurt, suffering and pain. He wants us to come to him in prayer and release it all on him. It doesn’t take a structured prayer. There is no right way. Just be honest and take a step toward releasing the hurt that may be holding you back. Tell God who hurt you, what hurts you and how you feel. Ask God to take away the hurt. God can erase the hurt and have you feeling as if it never happened. Matthew 11: 28 – “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” God’s word is like medicine for our soul. Psalm 147:3 – “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Each scripture, every word can mend our brokenness if only we would let it. “For nothing will be impossible with God.” – Luke 1:37.
