Do you believe…

Photo by Sebastian Voortman on Pexels.com

A simple question but the answer is not so simple. Do you believe? What exactly do you believe? Why do you believe? You may have found yourself, wondering this at some point in your life.

Merriam-Webster defines belief as having a firm or wholehearted religious conviction or persuasion to regard the existence of God as a fact. Another definition is to accept (something) as true.

Ask yourself, do you regard the existence of God as fact? What things do you accept as true? Belief is the core foundation of anything you do.

To relate to God, you first have to believe that he is who he says he is. He has given us many reasons to believe he is who he says he is. From the intricate way he created our bodies to the perfect way he designed the universe with the tiniest of details. God gave us everything we needed in our world and atmosphere to thrive.

Some may feel like belief in God makes us abandon all good sense and reasoning. However, belief in God is the beginning of good sense, sound judgment and reasoning. 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that God gives us a sound mind. In other words a calm and well-balanced mind. Proverbs 2:6 tells us that God gives us wisdom. So believing in God does not cause us to abandon God sense or reasoning.

What you believe about a person is going to affect the way you relate to them. If you don’t trust a person then you will deal with them in a guarded way. If you don’t believe a person’s word or promise then you don’t act on it or put much value in it. You have to get to know a person in order to build a relationship or to believe in them or their promises. It takes relationship to trust a person’s actions.

Jeremiah 29:13 says you will seek me and find me when you search with all your heart. This sets your foundation. Only then will you know what you believe and why you believe. Which is a strong foundation. It is very difficult to tell someone about God or to minister if your own belief doesn’t have a strong foundation.

We can dispel any arguments that God is a fairytale or myth because we cannot or have not seen him. We can’t see air but we know it’s there. We can feel it. We know it’s real because of how it affects people, places and things. We cannot live without it. The same with God. We can see his hand in everything and everywhere. We need him in order to live.

A personal relationship with Christ is where it begins. Prayer and time with God and reading his word is how you get to know him. Others will try to give you their opinions, stories and experiences. I urge you to have your own encounter with God. You will never be the same. Pray for wisdom, when reading his word so that the things that need to be revealed will be revealed, and that will start a strong foundation in you. Meditate on his word. Think about it day and night. Keep it in your heart for these words will guide you daily.

If you read his word and spend time with him, you will know what his very nature is. You will have a real encounter, and you will never be the same. And that foundation can never be shaken. And you will know what to say in that moment when someone asks you, do you believe?

Heroes…

Photo by Antonius Ferret on Pexels.com

Everyone loves a good hero in a story. The one that goes above and beyond! The one who is selfless and is always there to save the day. These heroes often times exhibit supernatural strength and limitless capabilities and courage. They…are on the front lines!

Many of us know people like this, have experienced these heroes in our lives or we have been these heroes. In whatever way you have experienced this heroism it has left us with a good feeling. A sense of comfort, satisfaction and security. We feel full just knowing that whatever the situation, our hero will be there to shield us, protect us and even guide us.

God is much like the heroes I’ve been describing and actually exceeds any form of heroism I can think of. I mean, his resume is a mile long. He has a proven record with numerous amounts of references. And talk about sacrifice, he gave the ultimate sacrifice, his Son! If that is not a SUPERHERO I don’t know what is. God is a hero that is omnipresent. You can’t miss him! He is everywhere all the time. Whew! Talk about having your back! God, the ultimate Hero is even omniscient! He knows e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g! There is nothing that goes on that he doesn’t know already. I mean listen…he even knows the future! Can you say “God” for the win! Wait! Listen to this. He is also omnipotent! Boom! That’s the icing on the cake! The chocolate to the chip. The Son to the rise. Did ya see what I did there? He is able to do anything! He has unlimited power! Who wouldn’t want a hero like this?

Those of us that know God understand that he is more than just a hero, he is so much more! Sadly enough, not everyone knows this hero. Or at least not in a personal way. That is one of the reasons he called us to tell others about him. So that they can experience all that the father has to offer. So why is it so hard to tell others about Jesus? When we find a good restaurant, we can’t wait to tell others about it. When we find a great hairstylist, we can’t wait to tell others about it. When we find a good deal, we can’t wait to tell others about it.

Well, we have found the most life creating, changing, saving being in the universe! His name is Jesus Christ. We should never go a day without telling someone just how great he is. He is a master at introductions. He is the expert on all subject matter. He is able to love better than anyone. He adds to your life, not take from it. He helps you to grow and develop your character. He has so much he wants to reveal about himself, if only you will let him. So today and everyday purpose to tell someone about Jesus. Everyone needs the Ultimate Superhero in their life.

Nuggets…

Photo by Valeria Boltneva on Pexels.com

I’ve always used the term “let me drop a nugget,” when I’ve felt like I had a piece of information that I thought was important. Nuggets were something so important and good to have or know. Now, nuggets can be informational but can also be opinion-based. Either way, Oh boy do I have some nuggets for you today!

GOD – God gets a bad wrap! Let me explain what I mean. People tend to blame God for everything without even knowing who he actually is. His very character has been misinterpreted. God is not a genie in the sky or some hit man to use at your discretion whenever someone does something you deem as wrong. Nor is he hiding in every corner of your life waiting to jump out and torture you for doing wrong. God is a loving father who who wants the very best for you. He IS a Holy God, but he loves you with an everlasting love. He wants relationship with you. He has plans to prosper you. He wants to see you live a redeemed life. But there are expectations as with any parent but perfection is not one of them.

PASTORS – Pastors/Ministers are people too. Sometimes people fall into making these individuals the gods of their lives. There is only one God who is perfect in all his ways. God’s shepherds are not perfect people. Now I’m not referring to false teachers, or any of the nonsense we see happening today with some church leaders who really don’t know God. What I mean is the women and men of God who truly have heeded the calling of a shepherd, they are going to mess up sometimes. If you happen to fall privy to one of these mistakes, pray for them. Also believe it or not, they need refreshing. They pour into the lives of others constantly and it is not an easy job to lead.

FORGIVENESS – is not acceptance. Sometimes people are reluctant to forgive because they feel like they are accepting the behavior or that they are signaling that they are okay with the situation. That is not the case. Forgiveness means that you refuse to let that person’s behavior, actions or any situation cause you to hold a grudge and harbor bitterness. By no means does forgiveness equal acceptance. In fact, forgiveness is freedom for you. Freedom from hatred , roots of bitterness, and any of those things that will hinder you. Also know that forgiveness does not mean that the relationship will be the same. Sometimes it can be repaired and sometimes it cannot.

COMMUNITY – is important. Everyone needs a tribe. I know sometimes people may say they don’t need anyone. That is simply not true. We were created to have relationship with the father and others. It is very important to do life with others. We need people we can depend on, laugh with, cry with, celebrate with, mourn with. People who we encourage and who encourages us. People who hold us accountable and vice versa. We should bring community with us to others. It shouldn’t be exclusive where no one else can be a part of it. Again, everyone needs someone.

LOVE – Love is the best! To love and to be loved. There is nothing like it in the world. How can I argue, fight, be jealous, be hateful etc. when I’m busy showing love to others. Love doesn’t care about offense, Love doesn’t keep score. Love causes you to grow in so many ways. Not that it is always easy, not that you will always get it right. But purpose to love and show love everyday.

Ok God, you have my attention. Now what?

Photo by T Leish on Pexels.com

Often times God is trying to get our attention and we are befuddled with so many of life’s situations . He wants to be involved in every aspect of our life. He is there with us in every situation yet, often times we fail to acknowledge his presence. We go about our busy lives thinking that we are the playmakers, the ones making things happen. How foolishly do we depend on ourselves in every situation. How foolishly do we allow ourselves to worry about situations we don’t have the power to change. Day in and day out we burn the candle at both ends. From the time our feet hit the ground to the time we crawl back into our beds at night, we are busy with obligations and expectations. We sometimes barely have time for a “God is great, God is good, let us thank him for our food” prayer, let alone anything else. Managing expectations and obligations as best we can. Family on our minds, our jobs in our hand and tiredness at our feet, with a little bit of me time sprinkled in like leftovers.

Sound familiar? Well I can tell you, you are not alone. God is never going to go past you inviting him in. Have you ever seen a child try so hard at something and you say to them, “let me help you” and they refuse and they continue to struggle, and struggle, almost like a dog chasing their tail? You want to help them so bad, but they are determined to do it themselves. Now I am not saying that determination is a bad thing. I am saying when they struggle and frustrate themselves so much that if they would have let you help them, you could have eased that frustration. They would have accomplished whatever they were trying to do by now. If only they would have let you in. So you say “okay” and you let them do it their way. Much like when you have come to the end of yourself. When you fumble every expectation you had for yourself, your future and anything anyone else expected of you. When perfect isn’t perfect anymore. When work be “working,” when the bills are “billing,” and the math ain’t “mathing.” When everything starts to close in. You start to feel that nervous, anxious, lump in the throat feeling. You start to realize “I don’t have this under control, I can’t control any of this.” And when you can’t take it anymore, you suddenly remember, you have a life line. “Lord where are you?” Then your stomach becomes uneasy, and your whole face hurts and you suddenly realize you’ve been in a season of “YOU!” Your strength, your ability, your focus, your everything. Then you do the smartest thing you could ever do. You either look up from the floor, or you pull your head out of your hands and you look toward the sky and say “Okay God, you have my attention, now what?”

And just like the gentleman father he says “now it’s time to rest.” All this time, he’s been waiting for you to invite him in. He has been there all along, waiting to jump in like double dutch. He’s the best life coach there is and he has extended hours. His recipe for success is time with him. Time to get to show you how magnificent he is. How his yoke is easy and his burden is light. How he can transform every area of your life. How he and only he, can bring about change. And truly give you rest and peace. Let God in to every area of your life. You will see life is better with him in control.

It’s bad wind that doesn’t shift..

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

I’ve heard this saying a few times as I was growing up. My mother used to quote this all the time. As I got older I understood what this meant. Too many times I have heard people say “I haven’t changed,” or “I’m still the same old me.” Really, it would be a shame if we were “the same old us.” Let me explain.

As we journey through life, with its ups and downs and highs and lows, there should be an adjustment that takes place, a change of sorts. As we get older, we should not be the same inexperienced individuals we were at one time. How can you experience life’s ebbs and flows and not be changed in some way?

The same is true when you have a relationship with Christ. God tells us that if we are in Christ we are a new creation, old things are passed away, behold, all things become new. Ephesians 4:22 tells us to put off the old man and put on the new man (summarized). So why should we be okay with being the same old us. I’ll give you another one that I have heard over and over throughout the years, ” I’m a work in progress.” It’s okay to be a work in progress for a time, but when is the work going to be finished? What I mean is, we cannot continue to use that as an excuse not to change for the better. We cannot use that to stay at the same level and never progress to where God is calling us.

In marriage, you have heard some people say their spouses have changed. Why yes, sometimes they have changed. In marriage you are constantly learning each other all over again daily because we are going to change, and hopefully for the better.

Bad wind that doesn’t shift, simply means this. You cannot be healthy and whole and not change. You cannot stay at the same level and grow. You cannot obtain all that God has purposed for you in your same old way. You have to adjust. you have to grow, you have to move, you have to elevate. So be open to what God has in store for you. Be sensitive to his spirit and direction. We are no good to ourselves or anyone else without healthy change. And, it is okay to say, I’m not the same old me. You will not lose cool points. You’ve actually gained them by leveling up. So I challenge you today, stop being the same old you. Become the new you in Christ. Allow God to change your mind and to change you from the inside out. I promise you, you’ll love the new you.

He loved us before we knew him….

How does this happen? How can someone love me before I even know them. The only example I can remotely come up with to understand this is how a mother has a deep love and connection with her child while still in the womb. Parents take great care in planning for the arrival of their new little blessing. They comb over every detail to make sure everything is just right for their new arrival. Each detail is planned with love and thoughtfulness. From the decoration of a baby’s room, to each piece of clothing, to where the baby will sleep, to what kind of blankets will make them feel most comfortable. What comfort toys would he/she need? Every detail is planned out with the baby in mind. Not only does these plans start at infancy, but even before the baby arrives, parents are planning their child’s future. Deep consideration goes into planning so that this child has everything they need.

In this same way, but better, God has loved and planned for us. Ephesians 1: 4-5 tells us that “even before he made the world, he loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.” Then it goes on to say that “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.” But here is the part where I want you to pay attention, the last part of verse 5 is the part that blows my mind. “This is what he wanted to do and it gave him pleasure.” God took pleasure in planning our life for us. Oh, how he must really Love us!

Then in Ephesians 1:1 it tells us that God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm in Christ Jesus. He has then provided everything we need. Not part of what we need, not some of what we need, but everything we need and gave us an inheritance! What a wonderful God we serve.

So remember how loved and provided for you are. That every detail was thought of concerning you and I. That God did not spare his own Son but gave him up for all of us – Romans 8:32. This is the God that people need to know about. Our Father who loved us, before we knew him.

Beauty in my Brokenness…

Photo by Ric Rodrigues on Pexels.com

Dedicated to Dionn

Let’s face it we all are or have been broken vessels at some point in our lives. Our broken minds, broken spirits, broken bodies, broken world, are all a part of brokenness. The inability to function in the state that we are in. Our raggedness, every ounce of pain and despair are felt in the depths of brokenness. Brokenness is another way to describe being “crushed in spirit.” Whether this is from the loss of a loved one, trials, tribulations, struggles, addiction, depression or insecurity. Brokenness can make you feel that your very existence should be questioned, when you don’t see a way out, when you feel that there is no purpose you can fulfill. When you thought you could piece that thing back together, when you thought you could crazy glue all the fragmented pieces of your life together and you realize there is just no way it’s going to hold. It is at that very moment that God is the closest to you. He is there! And in this moment… we realize, we need Him. We need Jesus!

Even in the midst of your brokenness, God has made a way for you, God doesn’t ask us to pick ourselves up and come meet him, NO! He meets us where we are, in the very spot we are in, where we feel like we can’t take a step, he meets us there. And it is there where he will help you catch your breath. Jesus meets us there and he lets us know that we don’t have to face it alone. He tells us that he is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit, Psalms 34:18. The heart and the spirit cries out and the only comfort and healing that can be found is in Him. That….is the Beauty in brokenness.

Jesus extends mercy in our time of need. This Brokenness guides us closer to God who makes us whole. So my friends, brokenness is not insignificant, yet the significance is that there is something beautiful in the brokenness that propels us toward a Savior who knows our brokenness, who has felt what it feels like to be broken. He will bound up our wounds and It is God who has the ability to transform our very pain into purpose. It is He who can give meaning to every situation which allows us to connect with others who have experienced the same. God is a God of restoration. He will restore you in a way that you never expected. God is also a God of refuge, it is in him where we can find that safe place. Though you may feel knocked down, defeated and even destroyed, get ready for your big comeback. No destructive plan is greater than God’s redemptive plan for our life.

I’m doing my best…

This title speaks to probably half of the world right now. I’m doing my best. Have you ever felt so overwhelmed, so tired, so energy depleted that you felt as though sometimes there was nothing left? You’ve heard people say “I’m just trying to make it” or “I’m just getting by.” Day after day we all are trying to navigate pressure, decisions, expectations, layers and layers of responsibility and yet we are doing our best. When your job continues to add more and more responsibility, more expectation, more hours and you are barely keeping up. You are doing your best.

When there is mounting pressure at home. You are trying to keep up with running a household. The toys are everywhere, the house is messy, laundry keeps piling up and dinner is not ready on time. You are doing your best. Maybe you have older kids and you are trying to stay connected with them, lead and guide them in the right way but it seems that everything you do is not enough, you are doing your best.

Maybe you don’t have any kids, you are living alone and you are handling everything by yourself. You are faced with every decision on your own and you are doing everything to keep things afloat. You are doing your best. Maybe you are single and you’ve been dating and nothing is working out. You’ve tried different dating apps and you’ve been on countless blind dates and still no real connection. You are doing your best.

Maybe you are on a hamster wheel and you feel like every decision you make leads you back to the same result. Maybe you are trying to keep it all together with a long string of dental floss and if that string gets pulled any tighter, everything is going to pop. You are literally doing your best.

The common thread to all these situations and many more is that you are doing your best. God does not want you to do your best, he wants to give you his best! God has given us peace for every situation. First, if you stand in the middle of that situation where you are doing your best and just surrender and give it to God, he will give you peace. I’ll give you Matthew 6:34 – “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Philippians 4:6 – “Do not be anxious about anything but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Next we have Psalm 4:8 – “In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord make me dwell in safety.” And lastly, John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled neither let them be afraid.”

Take the pressure off! It does not belong to you. God has promised to carry our burdens. But he can’t if we are still carrying them. Think of it as God is trying to carry your bag of groceries and you tur around and face him and you are trying to carry it too. If you are trying to carry it with him, you cannot see what is in front of you. Let go, turnaround and walk forward. I know that sometimes it feels as if it’s not that simple, but pray and ask God to help you.

God wants to intervene in your situation. NO matter what that situation is. God cares about your heart and your well being. Next, see these situations for what they really are. You cannot do anything, change anything or even give anything, unless God allows it. We are not of our own strength. He gives us the ability to do all that we do. So only HE can change what is happening.

Matthew 6:33 tells us to “Seek the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Everything you need! That is your basic needs and much more. Seeking the kingdom of God just means to turn to God first instead of worrying or taking on the pressures of this world. We are to sincerely put him first. This is how we pursue righteousness.

Here are a list of ways you can seek God in the midst of your situation:

  • Pray
  • Read your Bible
  • Worship God
  • Repent
  • Praise
  • Be thankful

Listen, God has given us many things. He gave his only begotten son, he gave us the holy spirit, love, freedom, peace and much more. So when you find yourself giving your best, stop, and accept God’s best. Experience the freedom he provides when you allow him into your situations. Grab ahold of the Joy he gives when you let go of worry, anxiety and stress. Hold tight to the peace you’ll have when realize that God’s best is the best you can do.

You are not your own..

1 Corinthians 6:20 tells us that we’ve been bought with price, therefore honor God with your bodies. That price was Jesus’ blood. Often times we really don’t understand what that means. I challenge you today to look at it from another perspective. Look at it through a different lens.

Honoring God with our bodies is one thing, but how about with our words, our actions and our social media. Honoring him should extend to all the areas of our life. The more we focus on what it means to honor him, the more we realize all the areas we can honor him in. Let’s look at social media for a moment. There is nothing like a good phrase or meme or GIF that makes us laugh, or hits home. However, there are popular phrases or stances that goes directly against honoring God and realizing that we were bought with a price. In our culture today we sometimes encourage attitudes that are in direct conflict with the Word of God. If we are not careful, we become immune and hit that like button or heart button in agreeance. Here are a few examples:

  • “You do you”
  • “Don’t worry about what anyone says”
  • “I do what I want”
  • “Don’t worry about anybody but you”
  • “When people show you who they are, believe them”
  • “Don’t be concerned with those, that aren’t concerned with you”

At first glance, these seem harmless. They may even seem encouraging. But that is the trick. I’ll be honest, one of my favorites was “when people show you who they are believe them.” That is not right. When people show you who they are, show them who God is. We are not our own, so if we were bought with a price, how can we just do “us?” No we need to do “Jesus.” “You do you” might be the most dangerous of all. You doing you can lead to you creating your own truth, reality and right and wrong. You are creating your own world which in turn has caused you to step into God’s place. This is a dangerous place to be.

We also need to care about what our actions look like and what our words sound like. We don’t do what we want, we do what Jesus would do. Jesus was concerned for people, how can we not be? We sing songs about God’s will, his way and surrendering. We have to live it. We often times encourage selfish thinking. The “me” mentality. Jesus gave of himself everyday. The enemy wants us to be so immune to things that are in direct conflict with God. These things are normalized as if it is just a part of life. When you are born again, you have a different life. When you know what it is to have a savior who is selfless, who is the very expression of Love, you don’t want to be left to your own devices. Luke 9:23 tells us “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

In every area of our life we need to realize that Jesus has paid a great price to set us free. We need to seek to please him in everything we do and not ourselves. The first part of Romans 12:2 says, Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. We must not fall into the pattern of this world by conforming to the “norms.” We are not our own. The reason our minds must be renewed is to change the way we think, so that we will actually understand what is pleasing to God.

When we say yes to Jesus, we actually give up the right to live by our own rules. We take on a new found Freedom that only came through Christ. God set us free to so that we don’t carry the guilt and shame of our past sinful nature. It sets us free to love and have relationship with God. So as we go about our lives be intentional about how our words, actions and even social media are honoring God. We’ve been bought with a price and Thank God for his sacrifice.

People Pleaser…

Often we get caught up in a whirlwind of other people’s expectations and priorities. If you are like I was, you find yourself never wanting to disappoint anyone. You will go the extra mile even if it kills you. You will take on heavy loads just to make sure that others are okay. Meanwhile, you are falling apart at the seams. You feel as though you don’t know whether you are coming or going. Always busy, never enough time for yourself. Never wanting to let anyone down, being afraid of what they may say or how they may view you. And then, just when it seems as if you cannot take an ounce of anything else, the praise almost makes it seem as if it was worth it. When people shout your praises, “oh we can always count on you,” “you never let us down,” “if anyone can do it you can.” And then we hop right back on the hamster wheel of expectation, careful not to let anyone down. Meanwhile we are suffering from silent battles of fatigue, exhaustion, wrong thinking and what I like to call “people pleasing syndrome” or PPS.

I suffered from PPS for a long time. It was almost second nature to say yes to almost anything. Even if I knew it would literally kill me. But it wouldn’t be said that I didn’t come through, that I wasn’t loyal, that you couldn’t count on me. My friends, let me tell you, that is the quickest way to burn out and build up an attitude of resentment. Now hear me out, there is nothing wrong with being there for others, being reliable and trustworthy. That is far from what I am saying. But if we are not careful, we fall into the area of people pleasing.

It is okay to say “no.” Let me say that again for the people in the back, it is okay to say a blessed “I’m sorry, I will not be able to handle that.” Give yourself a break! God never meant for us to run ourselves ragged. Sometimes people will continuously push, push, push, as long as you say yes, yes yes. Don’t, get me wrong, we should be helpers, however, how can you give if your tank is empty? Think about it, why do you think the instructions on the airplane is to first give yourself oxygen and then help others? It’s because you first have to have oxygen to be able to help anyone else. It is the same in life. It is okay to rest! Even God rested when the work was done. Everyone needs to refuel, replenish and make sure that their mind, body and soul are ready for the next adventure.

People pleasing also comes with the wrong motives. We are doing things for acceptance and validation from man. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Galatians 1:10 says “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Some people believe that God is going to be mad or look down on them if the say “no,” this is simply not the case. The bible tells us that “Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety,” Proverbs 29:25.

God wants us whole. He want’s us to serve him with the right attitude. God loves us and has already accepted us through his grace. There is no amount of work, helping, serving that will cause him to love us. He already does. Shame and fear tells us that we have to work hard for his approval and the approval of man. Don’t fall into this misconception. We should have joy and peace. That’s what flows when we operate out of Love and not expectation or people pleasing. There is a quote, that I really love and stand on until this very day “Let pleasing God become bigger than pleasing people.”
